Project Overview

The importance of maintaining healthy weight in childhood is well recognised. New guidelines inform the provision of growth assessment and dietary advice for children in the dental setting, and as dental professionals have not previously played a significant role in children’s health weight, it is anticipated that a guideline implementation strategy (GIS) will be required for adherence to these guidelines. This three-phase study aims to therefore review the existing literature, co-design and evaluate a GIS for the new guidelines.

Aims & Objectives

This project aims to develop an implementation strategy to facilitate the translation of these new guidelines into practice. The project will be undertaken across the following 3 phases:

  1. Phase 1: Literature reviews to summarise the role of dental practitioners in addressing childhood obesity, and effective guideline implementation strategy (GIS) for the dental setting.
  2. Phase 2: Developing the GIS through a co-design process with dental practitioners and parents of children in the district, which will be finalised by an expert panel.
  3. Phase 3: Evaluating the GIS through a validated questionnaire, which will be developed to measure practitioners’ intention to adhere to the new guidelines. The effectiveness of the GIS will be evaluated by analysing changes in practitioners’ intention to adhere to the new guidelines, as well auditing practice changes before and after the GIS is delivered.
