Project Overview

Individuals with mental illness experience significant oral health inequalities compared to those living without a mental illness. This project will explore the oral health experiences of adolescent mental health consumers and their carers, as well as the mental health nurses experience of oral health in the inpatient mental health setting, including the suitability and feasibility of nurse-led oral health promotion strategies.

Aims & Objectives

The overall aim of this study is to develop nurse-led intervention strategies to promote oral health among adolescents in inpatient mental health settings. Specifically this project aims to explore:

  1. To explore the views of adolescents who have experienced an inpatient mental health admission, and their carers, about oral healthcare and potential supportive strategies.
  2. To explore the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of mental health nurses in Australia in providing oral healthcare to individuals with a mental illness and to identify barriers and predictors of their practice.
  3. To explore the perceptions of mental health nurses who care for adolescents in Australia in providing oral healthcare and their potential role in oral health promotion.
  4. To integrate study findings to inform nurse-led intervention strategies to promote the oral health of adolescents in inpatient mental health units.
